Visa
A student Visa is an endorsement in your passport to allow you to enter or re-enter New Zealand. It shows you have permission to travel to New Zealand and may be granted a Student Permit when you arrive. You do not need a student Visa or permit to study in New Zealand if you are:

a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand Residence Permit holder ; or
an Australian Citizen, or a resident who holds a current Australian resident return visa ; or exempt from the requirement to hold a Permit to be in New Zealand ; or to undertake a course of more than three months and holds a visitor's visa or Permit ; or the holder of a Limited Purpose Visa for study purpose.

You will need to apply for a Student Visa if you are outside New Zealand, and are coming to New Zealand to study full time for longer than three months. However potential students entering New Zealand from visa free countries will be able to apply for a student permit once they have found an educational institute.

Working in New Zealand
Students undertaking a full-time long term course of study culminating in a recognized diploma or degree taking at least two academic years to complete and student undertaking a full time course culminating in a qualification that would attract points under the Skilled migrant category of Residence Policy, may be granted a variation of conditions to their student permit to allow them to work for no more than 15 hours per week.

If the students have a student permit for more than 12 months he/she may apply for a variation of condition to his/her Student Permit to allow to work over the Christmas and New Year holidays. No offer of employment is required.
If a person is a Polytechnic or university undergraduate student and have successfully completed in New Zealand a course that has a minimum completion time of 3 years or would attract points under the Skilled Migrant category of Residence policy.

He/she may apply for a work permit to obtain practical experience suitable to your qualification. Permission to work may be granted for up to a maximum of two years after the minimum completion time of the course.
Residents and people holding work permits for a stay of two years or more are eligible for publicly funded health and disability services.
